What are some differences between the Baylor College program and the 49ers Professional program? Blake might be the only person who has played in both the Briles Spread and Kelly Spread systems. These have been major innovations in the offence game for the sport in the last 10 years. Without giving away too much:-

  • Both the Briles and Kelly spread use a similar tempo at practice. No major adjustment required for Blake at practice. The pace was very familiar.
  • The OL get a unique signal to the backs and receivers in the Kelly system. At Baylor the OL would get a verbal call from QB for each play.
  • A lot more use of outside zone in the Kelly system. Close to a 50/50 ratio. The Briles system rarely uses outside zone, barely a handful of game reps in the last 3 years.
  • Plays are packaged for both and the QB run option has been dis-emphasised for each system in the last few years.
  • As you would expect in the professional game, the Kelly system has more variation in pass protection systems. One of the big advantages that the NFL has over college is the amount of classroom meeting time that is available to install technical/tactical elements of the game.
  • In the college game, the spring practice structure allows for full contact reps in practice and scrimmage where in the NFL the collective bargaining agreement doesn’t allow for full contact reps in pads up to this point in the calendar. For offensive linemen it means that their total effectiveness in blocking, especially in the run game, will not be realised until fall camp.

Other differences that you may not think about….

  • The food at the 49ers facility is obviously pretty good. They’ll even cook certain things on request. Baylor has the new BANC facility but we’re comparing amateur college to professional football here.
  • General training is not as frenzied at the 49ers in the gym. Blake was able to return home at the heaviest and strongest that he has been in. Usually all of the club’s college players lose weight and strength in the college off season programs.

Baylor has welcomed new Head Coach Jim Grobe to take over for the 2016 season.

Grobe retired from Wake Forest after the 2013 season. From the official announcement from the Baylor Athletics page…..

2006 Associated Press National Coach of the Year Jim Grobe
has been named acting head football coach, effective immediately. Grobe
brings to Waco 19 seasons of Football Bowl Subdivision head coaching
experience and a well-earned reputation for disciplined play, having
enjoyed a record-setting 13-year tenure at Wake Forest (2001-13) and a
successful six-year run at Ohio University (1995-2000).

In additional significant changes to the Baylor Athletics program, Athletic Director Ian McCaw has resigned

McCaw has asked that the University distribute the following statement on his behalf:

After much reflection and prayer, I have decided that a change in
athletics department leadership is in Baylor University’s best interest
in order to promote the unity, healing and restoration that must occur
in order to move forward. I have always sought to put the University’s
needs ahead of my own. My time at Baylor has been an incredible journey
filled with some of the most remarkable people I have ever known. I am
grateful to Baylor Nation for its support and dedication, and to all who
have done so much to advance the athletics program.
